Why Do We Want to Put the New into the Old?
Yesterday we looked at how Jesus communicated truth about how we cannot mix the old and new ways of living life using the analogy of wineskins. Seems pretty self explanatory but why do we want to put the new into the old in the first place?
Our struggle as humans is that we want more without any sacrifice. We want new, but want to hold onto the old. Craving change while things still stay the same. Truth is we want our cake and to eat it too! In our present culture, we are inundated with the temptation to consume “the more the better.” The more we have the better life will be so why would we ever think of getting rid of the old? We want it all...and yet…we cannot have it both ways.
Calibration:
- Can you think of an area of your life where you know you need change but have been unwilling to sacrifice to receive it?
- Why do you struggle to release the old wineskin? What does holding onto the old wineskin really give you? What is it really costing you?
