Straining, striving, working, doing…these are the things that seem to come so natural. I somehow buy into the lie that I can or must “earn” the love of God. It’s so easy to slip back into the mindset of an orphan or a slave, placing perceived security in my performance. But scripture clearly reminds me of the truth:
Galatians 4:6-7 Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.
Romans 8:14-15 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”
In this Truth I find FREEDOM! I am reminded that I can never earn my identity as a son…it is simply offered through the redemption of Jesus offered by a loving father! So I urge you, walk in this freedom. Don’t believe the lie that you must earn God’s love and approval. Do not walk in a spirit of slavery and fear, but walk as a son – a son of a Good Father.
“Failure to recognize the value of mere being with God, as the beloved, without doing anything, is to gouge the heart out of Christianity.” Brennan Manning
