Our Search For True Identity

There is a yearning that often we cannot explain that drives us toward something and yet leaves us unsatisfied and unfulfilled. Even if we have accomplished great things in our life, are successful by the world’s standards (even by the church’s standards), there is still a nagging sense that there is more. If we just look around we can see that all of humanity is searching for “who am I?” and “why and I here?” Have you ever stopped and wondered why this is? We believe this is simply because somewhere deep down, consciously or subconsciously, we know we were created to be and for something more…GK Chesterton nailed it:
“Every man has forgotten who he is. One may understand the cosmos, but never the ego; the self is more distant than any star. We are all under the same mental calamity; we have all forgotten our names. We have all forgotten what we really are. All that we call common sense and rationality and practicality and positivism only means that for certain dead levels of our life we forget that we have forgotten. All that we call spirit and art and ecstasy only means that for one awful moment we remember that we forget.”
If we could only remember, if only we knew WHAT to remember!

And so knowing WHERE to search for the answers is “mission critical.” Where we find ourselves today is determined by where we have gone to answer these questions and satisfy this deep longing of our heart. SO lets change our Source for answers and look to our Creator. Here’s the truth: We are all sons and daughters of the one true King and amazing father and we are created in His image! Again GK Chesterton brings some “remembering” when he says: “We were statues of God walking about in a Garden.” We have an original glory, a very distinct and specific design, and qualities of our lives that were created in us by our Heavenly Dad. No wonder we constantly seek and search, because we were created for something far greater than where we find ourselves – our IDENTITY as a son or daughter!

So ask yourself: where do I search for validation and identity? Am I seeking my affirmation from my Heavenly Dad? Or do I attempt to get it through feeling important, being successful, dating the hottest guy or gal, or through addiction that numbs the deep heartache?

“For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his son through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.” Ephesians 1:4-5
